Decaffeinated coffee introduction

Decaffeinated coffee or Decaf coffee is type of coffee with only a small amount of caffeine.

There are many ingredients and substances in coffee, among which caffeine has a significant effect on the human body. Generally speaking, in coffee beans, Arabica coffee beans contain 1.1%~1.7% caffeine, while Robusta coffee beans contain 2%~4.5%d caffeine.

What is the difference between decaf and regular coffee?

1. Different caffeine content:
The biggest difference between traditional coffee and decaf coffee is the caffeine content of the coffee. Generally speaking, the two major coffee varieties, Arabica and Robusta, contain 1.1%~1.7% of Arabica coffee beans and 2% caffeine in Robusta coffee beans~4.5% d caffeine. In decaf coffee, the caffeine content should not exceed 0.3%.

2. The taste is different:
Caffeine is one of the main sources of bitterness in coffee, so one of the biggest differences between decaf and traditional coffee is that decaf is generally not as bitter as traditional coffee (of course, poor cooking and roasting can also lead to more bitter).

3. Different processing methods:
Aside from natural decaf varieties, most decaf coffees are made through one of the methods of secondary processing, such as Swiss water treatment, which works by steeping the coffee in hot water and caffeine is dissolved in the water, but this treatment It also loses some of the substances that can contribute to the coffee flavor during roasting. As a result, the flavor intensity and complexity of decaf is generally weaker than that of regular coffee, especially in medium and light roasts, where decaf is less prone to fruity and floral aromas, but in darker roasts, the differences are relatively small.

The pros and cons of decaf coffee:
1. Decaf coffee usually contains similar antioxidants to traditional coffee, but they can be as low as 15%. This difference is likely due to a small loss of antioxidants during decaffeination. Therefore, more and more people choose decaffeinated coffee because it not only has antioxidant effects, but also does not affect sleep.

2. The difference between regular coffee and decaf coffee is that the main antioxidants in caffeine are hydrocinnamic acid and polyphenols. Antioxidants are very effective at neutralizing reactive compounds called free radicals. This reduces oxidative damage and helps prevent heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes.

3. Decaffeinated coffee contains small amounts of nutrients in addition to antioxidants. For example, a cup of decaffeinated coffee provides 2.4% of the recommended daily intake of magnesium, 4.8% of potassium and 2.5% of niacin, or vitamin B3. This might not seem like a lot of nutrients, but it adds up quickly if you drink 2-3 cups (or more) of coffee a day.

To sum it up, decaf coffee has many advantages. The only downside might be that the taste is a little weaker, not as good as regular coffee, but if the beans are good, it won't be too bad.
