Mundo Novo is the result of a natural cross between the Bourbon and Typica varieties of Mineiros do Tiete in São Paulo, Brazil. The seeds of the original coffee plant were planted in the city of Novo Mundo, called Urupês today, where the Mundo Novo variety was selected. This species was discovered in 1943.
The first selection of Brazilian Mundo Novo Coffee was completed between 1943 and 1952. This variety has been distributed to farmers in Brazil since 1952. IAC began to release new varieties in Brazil in 1977. This species is of commercial importance in Brazil and other southern regions of the United States, including Peru, but it is rarely used in Central America. It first arrived in Costa Rica in 1952, but was not widely adopted because farmers did not like its very high regulations. In 1963-64, Guatemala was introduced many times. In 1974, it was introduced to Honduras from CATIE. In Africa, Malawi has also been found.
The characteristic of this plant is its tall stature. It is full of energy to traditional American varieties, but matures later. The tip of the leaf can be green or bronze. The cross between Mundo Novo and the dwarf Caturra produced the dwarf Catuai.
